Tai O, explore an authentic fishing village

On the far west of Hong Kong, on the coast of Lantau Island, the village of Tai O retained its aspect and traditions over time.

While Hong Kong reveals urban landscapes worthy of a science fiction movie in some neighbourhoods, the Tai O village seems stuck in the past. With no traffic nor skyscrapers around, locals come and enjoy the place's peaceful atmosphere, on the western part of Lantau Island. Nicknamed the “Venice of Hong Kong”, it is a Tanka village, housing a community of fishermen living above water in houses on stilts. Each house leads to a ladder and its own small boat moored to it.

Today, as it used to be, the local industry remains fishing. Fish and seafood are piled up on market stalls. Restaurants serve the catch of the day at bargain prices. In Tai O, the line keeps growing longer to taste egg waffles – the best of all Hong Kong. After a visit of the village and its 17th-century Yeung Hau Temple, take the boat for an aquatic journey in between stilts all the way to the open sea, where you will be able to observe pink dolphins.
