The CRFIC is a window onto the world. The festival's competition includes three categories: feature-length films from Central America, international features (with 60 films from France, Egypt, Argentina, China, the US, South Korea and elsewhere), and Costa Rican shorts (12 works selected). Screenings are also planned for young audiences while others will be dedicated to the work of great directors. The organisers give priority to the originality of perspective, innovation, modernity, and the richness of the films' plotlines. On the programme this year: The Salesman from the Iranian director Asghar Farhadi and Elle from Paul Verhoeven, both of which were in competition at Cannes; Fire at Sea, the Berlin Golden Bear winner by Gianfranco Rosi; and Sonita, a multiple-award-winning Iranian documentary. Players from the film world meet with spectators at round tables for Q&A sessions after screenings and for master classes and workshops. These events are held in and around San José in Barrio Amón, Barrio Aranjuez, and Barrio Escalante.
